September Reading Challenge

Sophie's Reading Challenge for Teenage Cancer Trust

This September, I'm taking on my own reading challenge and raising funds to help ensure no young person faces cancer alone.

I'm a huge bookworm so am setting myself some specific goals to make this a challenge:
1) Read a book in a new genre (looking at you, horror and sci-fi)
2) Read a book set in a different culture or country
3) Read a classic

Your donation, big or small, makes a difference. £25 could pay for an hour with a Youth Support Coordinator to help a young person cope with anxiety and isolation during cancer treatment.

Thank you!

My Updates

The Call of Cthulhu

Friday 18th Sep
Notes on a Scandal was a ‘oh god that’s so creepy!’ read and now I’m back on some proper horror. Somewhat nervous about this one as Lovecraft was *very* problematic

Notes on a Scandal

Saturday 12th Sep
The Beekeeper of Aleppo was an at times difficult but beautiful read. It was a gift that had been sat on my bookshelf for some time so pleased I finally read it. Book four of the challenge is Notes on a Scandal - another one that ‘has sat on my shelf for years’. A former secondhand bookshop purchase!

Onto book 3!

Sunday 6th Sep
Well, my last read was a challenge in that it was a challenge to get through… Lesson learned about judging a book by its cover. I do however have higher hopes for The Beekeeper of Aleppo, which has been on my shelf for some time! Haven’t read that many books set in the Middle East or from the refugees’ perspective.

How Not to Travel the World

Saturday 5th Sep

Onto book 2!

Saturday 5th Sep
My next library slash I-would-never-normally-read this challenge book is ‘How Not to Travel the World’ by Lauren Juliff. I admit I picked this up was 95% for the title!

Finished The Time Machine!

Friday 4th Sep
Wow - to say this book was ahead of its time is an understatement. HG Well predicted so much from rampant capitalism, privatisation of land, technological and scientific advancements, even climate change! This quickly became one of my new favourite books and will be tough to follow.

Reading challenge book 1!

Tuesday 1st Sep
Starting September’s reading challenge as I mean to go on, with a genre I don’t usually dabble in. H.G. Wells’ ‘The Time Machine’ ticks two of those boxes (sci-fi and a classic) and I’ve long been meaning to read more of his works since The Island of Dr Moreau when I was a teenager.
